In the history sources for the first time Prilep is mentioned in 1014. The territory of the town and its surrounding represented one of the most important strategic, political and military areas on the Balkan. The Pelagonija region hosted very important crossroads in the direction of the Aegean and Adriatic Seas. Important ancient highways "Via Ignatia" and "Via Militaris" had their most natural connection through Prilep. Also, Prilep was the shortest route of the trading caravan road trafficked by Venice and Dubrovnik traders to reach Thessalonica. Throughout the centuries, various cultures such as the Hellenic, Byzantium and Slavic intertwined in this area. Most representative monumental complexes from the ancient period can be found on the location "Bedem" in village Cepigovo, "Bezisten" between the villages Prilepec and Volkovo and in the city itself. Remains from the ancient cities of Stibera, Alkomena, Keramija and Kolobansa have also been found on several locations. According to their frequency, medieval cultural and historic monuments are not less important. They include the churches St. Nicolas dating from the 13th century, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at the Treskavec monastery from the 15th, 16th and 19th century and the monastery with the Church Holly Transfiguration located in the village Zrze. The most important complex of cultural and historic monuments is located in the town, which was the centre of the wider political and territorial organization, and significant political and military residence of the Macedonian Czar Samuel. The medieval monumental complex Prilep encompasses the rocky hill "Marko Fortress" and the surrounding locations Potkuli, Varos and Zagrad. "Marko Fortress" hill encompasses one of the five biggest fortresses on the Balkan comprised of three defense belts and several fortresses and gates. The greatest progress in its medieval history, Prilep saw in the last quarter of the 13th and the first half of the 14th century. The results of such growth are the important monuments from that period, such as the unique archeological location from the 10th century Slav settlement, the church St. Archangel Michael with frescos from the 11th century, as well as the churches St. Dimitrius and St. Nicolas where 13th century frescos can be found. In the 19th century, a trade centre with the famous Old Bazaar was constructed in the town. During the period of the Macedonian cultural and national renaissance, Prilep represented an important centre of the Slav, i.e., Macedonian literacy, literature and culture. In that period particularly important was the educational activity in Prilep performed by the Macedonian teachers Jordan Hadzi-Konstatinov Dzinot, Dimitar Miladinov, Rajko Zinzifov and Kuzman Sapkarev, as well as the work of the famous collector of Macedonian folk works (songs, stories, riddles, saying, myths) - Marko Cepenkov. During the Ilinden period, the town was the centre of the Macedonian national and liberation movement. Many revolutionaries and fighters, including Pere Tosev, Gjorce Petrov, Petre Acev and others, originate from Prilep and Prilep region. On October 11th, 1941 with the attack on the Police Station, the armed uprising of the Macedonian people for its national liberation and independence from the fascist occupier started in Prilep. "The Hillock of the Undefeated" (Mogila), as one of the most important monuments where the remains of the more than 650 fighters from this area have been buried represents a testimony of the mass and devoted participation in the liberation war. The most important progress and growth, Prilep saw during the free post-war period when it was developed into an important political and administrative, cultural and educational, scientific and business centre in the Republic of Macedonia. Prilep has bestowed the Macedonian literature with more than 25 writers, the art with twenty painters and sculptors and the Macedonian scientific work with more renowned scientists. The result of the evident development is the Faculty of Economy and the other two scientific institutions: the Tobacco Institute and the Institute of Old Slavonic Culture. Business activity can be seen in several industrial branches such as the tobacco, metal, non-ferrous, chemical, textile and wood-processing industries. Prilep is a known world centre for the production of high quality tobacco of the "Prilep" type which is particularly demanded on the world market. Prilep is also a town of mines with the highest quality marbles in the world. Prilep is town of tobacco and marble, of rich cultural heritage and history, national pride and openness towards the world - a hero town. REVITALIZATION OF THE SPORTS AND RECREATION, CULTURAL AND HISTORIC COMPLEX "MOGILA" IN PRILEP Project holder: Public Communal Enterprise "Komunalec" - Prilep Partners: PE "Vodovod i kanalizacija"; Elektro-Prilep; PE "Makeodnski sumi"; business sector, represented by the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Prilep Budget: 7,163,020.00 MKD (own contribution 1,074,453.00 MKD, SDC donation 4,297,812.00 MKD, municipality's contribution 1,790,755.00 MKD) The town of Prilep does not have typical park as a space intended for rest and recreation of citizens. Except for "Mogila" there is no other recreational green area suitable for sports and walks - space that could be used by all citizens in the municipality. This project's goal is to improve the space "Mogila", to protect it and revive it, i.e., to create favorable conditions for sports and recreational activities for all citizens and visitors, including the persons with special needs. As part of the project the water supply network will be reconstructed (5 fountains will be constructed, 1 sanitary facility and 5 decorative ponds, all accessible for persons with special needs), the electricity network will be reconstructed (by placing 50 lights), the existing pedestrian paths will be reconstructed and new one will be constructed (running track in the length of 1,500 meters, bike track in the length of 1,500 meters and pedestrian path in the length of 30 meters). The construction of a skate park with an area of 64 m² and children’s amusement park with an area of 200 m², accessible for children with special needs, has also been anticipated, as well as a sports centre (with completely equipped tennis and handball playgrounds, which can easily be adjusted for indoor football and basketball, together with a volleyball playground). The existing amphitheatre will also be reconstructed and equipped with seats and lights. Horticultural landscaping of the area and placement of benches will contribute to the creation of a rest area for Prilep citizens. According to the plan, one of the symbols of revolutionary Prilep - "The Hillock of the Undefeated" will be revived and the surrounding area landscaped. Beneficiaries of the possibilities offered by the revived facility will be approximately 70,000 citizens of the Municipality of Prilep - sportsmen, recreation seekers, students, elderly people, persons with special needs, as well as tourists. Of course, the business sector will find its own interest in the project, as well as the public enterprises from the town.
VAROS - PRIDE OF THE CULTURE, TRADITION, FAIR
Project holder: NGO Forum for Vanguard Creativity - Prilep Partners: Municipality of Prilep, Institute and Museum - Prilep, Institute of Old Slavonic Culture - Prilep, the Macedonian Orthodox Church, Ministry of Culture Budget: 5,000,000.00 MKD (own contribution 800,000.00 MKD, SDC donation 3,088,000.00 MKD, municipality's contribution 1,332,000.00 MKD) The monumental complex Varos offers bountiful cultural and historic heritage that make Prilep a proud town. It is the centre of the cultural and historic monuments in the region dating from the late neolith, while nowadays the location hosts many monuments of the sacral architecture form the past centuries. Nevertheless, Varos has lost the glow and has not been visited as often as it should be having in mind its value. For the purpose of reviving it, infrastructural interventions are needed that would result in the creation of conditions for Varos's cultural promotion. As part of the project, activities will be taken in three directions: 1) connecting the existing monuments of the sacral and profane architecture with a path of 1,000 meters long for which natural materials will be used (it has been anticipated for the path to be lightened and benches to be placed along it, together with information signs and other urban elements); 2) landscaping and promotion of the fair area, by constructing an atrium entrance point to the cultural complex "Marko Fortress", where the construction would be multifunctional and shall create space for various cultural events and presentation of cultural contents; and 3) preparation, printing and distribution of promotional material for the purpose of contributing to the increased number of visitors. Besides the local population from Varos, for which the revival of this area will mean faster economic development of the community, project benefits will also be felt by the wider population, institutions of Prilep and from the wider region, and - by means of its promotion - the whole country. Forum session participants, considering the problems in the municipality, addressed the competent institutions with the following recommendations: The Forum recommended the Ministry of Interior to take action to provide for continuous utilization of parking lots intended for persons with special needs by them. As a result of this, the Ministry of Interior has reported that it had undertaken activities for strengthening the control of proper parking in the town. The Forum recommended the PE "Komunalec" to take measure to improve the hygiene in the central town area by placing containers. As a response to this, the PE "Komunalec" undertakes steps to precisely resolve the problem. Evaluation results
