The Association for Sustainable Development and Cooperation “Alka” is a Macedonian independent, nonprofit organization established in April 2004. The local association was established at the initiative of the members of the Integral Rural Development Unit (IRDU), who were working on implementing the Integral Rural Development Program funded by Sida in the period 2000-2004, and implemented as part of a British NGO (Children’s Aid Direct – CAD), and later by a French NGO (Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development –ACTED).
In accordance with its vision, Alka aims to contribute to the creation of an organized society whose citizens have the opportunity to take an active part in the creating of a better future. Alka’s mission is focused on promoting and supporting initiatives for sustainable development of human and material resources and strengthening of democratic processes in Macedonia. The association’s strategic objectives include: • Strengthening of the capacities of communities and local self-governments • Improving living conditions • Civil society support • Promotion and support of good governance Alka works with communities, municipalities and voluntary groups, providing professional, technical, advisory, and financial assistance. By employing a participatory approach, Alka works on community motivation, mobilization and self-organization, initiates activities for development planning and mobilization of available resources, simultaneously promoting cooperation and partnership between the community and institutions and other organizations.
