The Association for Democratic Initiatives (ADI) is a multiethnic non-governmental organization in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
Established in Gostivar Macedonia in 1994, ADI implements human rights and civil society projects that promote democracy and support peace and stability in Macedonia and Southeast Europe. Our activities focus on advocacy, education and public participation with assistance from our national, regional and international network of volunteers and partner organizations.
To better reach its objectives ADI has established offices in Kosovo (Prishtina), Albania (Tirana), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo), and USA (New York).
ADI’s activities are divided into four programs:
- human rights
- refugees, migrants, and IDP
- democracy and civil society
- education and youth.
ADI’s activities within its Human Rights Program include collecting information on human rights violation, translating and disseminating relevant reports, documents and publications from the field of human rights into local languages, and organizing seminars and workshops on respective international/national instruments and institutions that deal with the issues of human rights and human rights protection and promotion.
ADI’s activities within its Refugees, Migrants and IDP Program are to conduct legal analyses about the similarities and differences between national legislation and international standards, as well as promote legal harmonization.
Within its Democracy and Human Rights Program, ADI supports citizens, groups and NGOs in building their capacity and development. ADI also promotes the involvement of citizens in the decision-making process and works with local self-government institutions to ensure their transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.
The Education and Youth Program is focused on interethnic cooperation and intercultural learning. In this context, ADI has initiated several projects that promote similarities between various ethnic groups in Macedonia. Simultaneously, ADI is working on stimulating participation by vulnerable groups in life-long learning programs in order to develop specific knowledge and skills needed for active involvement in the economic field.
